A Bruegel on the move: masterpiece heads to Brussels for restoration

Pieter Bruegel the Elder’s painting Twelve Proverbs on Wooden Plates has been taken to the Royal Institute for Cultural Heritage (KIK) in Brussels for a thorough restoration.

The painting consists of twelve painted dinner plates and is therefore Bruegel’s most original work. We already know that he liked to depict words of wisdom, but why did he do so here on dinner plates? For whom did he create them, and what do these twelve proverbs mean?
